Project ALFRIED will be built on IOTA Chrysalis

One of Germany's largest publicly funded roadside infrastructure project will utilize the IOTA protocol as core technology. Autonomous vehicles have been a vision for decades. With more sophisticated sensor technology and manufacturing processes, we are now closer than ever reaching that vision. But autonomous driving is challenging. Vehicles must be able to understand their surroundings and adjust to a high number of changing conditions in real-time. This is becoming extremely critical within highway construction zones, where the margin of error is close to zero and the sensors of the vehicle are approaching their technical limits.

In order to provide holistic and accurate information reflecting the current situation for secure decision making, an external traffic infrastructure sensor network helps to provide additional data like for example detailed geographic reference points, road and weather conditions.

Meet ALFRIED
The ALFRIED project is with 11M€ one of Germany's largest publicly funded infrastructure project. ALFRIED is set up to provide the above-mentioned data over the coming years in a testbed in the city of Friedrichshafen, demonstrating the highest possible levels of autonomy and security in changing traffic and environmental conditions.

IOTA to secure the infrastructure of the future
To enable the system to operate on the highest possible resilience and security level, ETO GRUPPE will be utilizing the distributed IT-infrastructure IOTA, an open-source distributed ledger technology. IOTA is a secure, feeless, lightweight and highly scalable decentralized infrastructure for data and microscopic value transactions while not relying on any intermediaries. ETO GRUPPE has planned to leverage various IOTA libraries like Stronghold, Streams and Identity, at plausible junctures in the ALFRIED architecture warranting for the security, confidentiality and traceability of data and devices.

Benjamin Bönisch, VP Corporate Development and Strategy at ETO GRUPPE: “It is important to recognize the aspect of decentralized infrastructure redundancy as a native part of the IT architecture. Energy-wasting blockchains are contrary to our ecological philosophy. IOTA is already “green”. With its latest upgrade “Chrysalis'', the IOTA network became even more energy-efficient, which is key for battery-operated sensors. IOTA can be directly integrated into the hardware and can provide for the highest confidence in data security directly at the source while at the same time does not have any transaction fees for pure data transactions nor value transactions. Furthermore, additional aspects like digital identities and self-sovereign identities can be integrated. We are very confident about IOTA technology.”

Holger Köther, Director Partnerships at the IOTA Foundation: “At the IOTA Foundation, we are developing IOTA as the future digital public IT-infrastructure to securely connect billions of people, organizations and devices. ETO GRUPPE is a professional and forward-thinking hidden champion and we are excited to be working with the ETO GRUPPE project team over the coming years to provide an open source, highly scalable data integration layer to fit the group’s requirements now and in the future.”

With its latest Chrysalis upgrade, the IOTA Foundation has rewritten the codebase to the latest industry standards, simplifying the development experience and providing a feeless global data backbone.
